AN APPEAL FOR "HOPE"
For Italy’s 150th celebration of her Unity in 1861, let us raise funds for the restoration and cleaning of the highly visible but now begrimed statue by Odoardo Fantacchiotti of Hope in Florence’s Swiss-owned so-called ‘English’ Cemetery.
Italy for centuries had been divided and ground under the heels of other Powers, finally winning her freedom from them at the Risorgimento, helped largely by foreign supporters, many of whom, such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, are buried here. Among the ‘English’ Cemetery’s burials are many who worked against the oppression of nations, against slavery, against the labour of children in mines and factories, against the abuse of women. Another of our burials is of Nadezhda, who came to Florence at 14 from Nubia, a black slave, and who died in her thirties, her name from her baptism in the Russian Orthodox Church meaning ‘Hope’, her monument in marble already having been cleaned.
This allegory of ‘Hope’ on the tomb of Reginald Routh in marble, also can be restored in a symbolic Risorgimento, Renaissance, Resurrection, in our own moment in time through a donation, small or large, which will be gratefully received.
ODOARDO FANTACCHIOTTI
Colleague of Hiram Powers, Odoardo Fantacchiotti sculpted this outstanding but now neglected monument in 1860 for Samuel Reginald Routh, whose wealthy friends paid for it by subscription.
The restoration is being carried out by CNR “Nello Carrara” under Salvatore Siano in the EU, Regione Toscana project, TEMART, with the assistance of Alberto Casciani of Meridiana Restauri.
